Jennifer L. Costello was appointed Deputy Inspector General in November 2018 and became Acting Inspector General in June 2019. Prior to serving as Deputy Inspector General, she was DHS OIG’s Chief Operating Officer. Ms. Costello first joined DHS OIG in 2017 as the Assistant Inspector General (AIG) for Inspections and Evaluations.
Before working at DHS OIG, Ms. Costello served as a senior executive at the OIG for the U.S. Department of State and Broadcasting Board of Governors, where she was the AIG for Evaluations and Special Projects and testified before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform regarding the former Secretary of State’s use of her personal email account. Earlier in her career, Ms. Costello spent over 13 years at the Government Accountability Office (GAO) where she was an Assistant Director in the forensic audits and special investigations unit. She worked on a variety of issues affecting the American taxpayer, including Medicaid fraud, transit benefit fraud, debarred companies that continued to receive federal contracts, the employment of sex offenders in public schools, and the marketing of misleading genetic tests to consumers. During her tenure at GAO, Ms. Costello also served as a detailee to the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor & Pensions.
Ms. Costello is a Certified Fraud Examiner and a member of the Maryland State Bar Association. She earned her Juris Doctor from Washington College of Law, The American University and earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Georgetown University in Washington, DC.
