FEMA Continues to Experience Challenges in Protecting Personally Identifiable Information at Disaster Recovery Centers

We issued this advisory report to notify the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) of an issue that requires its immediate attention. During our audit ofFEMA’s initial response to the 2015 wildfires in Northern California, we observed personnel mishandling Personally Identifiable Information (PII) at disaster relief sites. FEMA officials need to take quick action to ensure the protection of PII in future disasters.
